Black Hogs

Heritageblacks Pigs20grazing

Pigswoodtrail Pigonsnow

The rare Heritage breed (explained in detail-follow the link to Wolfe Mountain Farms--from whence I stole all these pig pics) is claimed to be gentle and mighty tasty. We are going to find out this year. Locally Alder Brook farm in Maine raises them on pasture and sells meat smoked goods and piglets for 4H projects and to raise for food. I put my order in today for one piglet. I'm very excited. I would love to order two or three. But, I'm thinking that I should try it out with just the one this year since we are also ordering chicks and perhaps even have an Angus / Longhorn Heifer coming this spring! We are getting serious about growing all our own food. I understand the Black Hog doesn't grow as fast as some of the other meat types. We have to decide  in the fall to keep it through the winter or settle for less weight (?) so much to learn. But look they are hardy enough for Maine winter. I'll keep you posted.
